IX Russian Conference on Semiconductor Physics”, September 28–October 03, Tomsk

The IX Russian Conference on the Semiconductor Physics was hosted by the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Semiconductor Physics Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences and Tomsk State University. The leading semiconductor centers of Russia, such as A.F. Ioffe Physic-Technical Institute RAS (St.- Petersburg), Moscow State University (Moscow), Institute of Radio Electronics RAS (Moscow), P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute RAS (Moscow), Institute of the Solid State Physics RAS (Chernogolovka), e.t.c. took part in the event.

The subjects covered a wide range of physical and technological problems related to semiconductors:
epitaxy technologies of thin films producing primarily from the molecular beams and in-situ control of these processes;
development of technology for multi-layer structures - heterostructures, quantum-sized structures, super-lattices producing and theirs characterization;
manufacturing of bulk single crystals with the highest possible performance characteristics, especially the wide gap materials - SiC, GaN, II-VI, etc.;
investigation of electronic transport, optical properties, electronic states of the low-dimensional structures;
nanodevices – the technology and methods of investigation;
research of the spin phenomena - spintronica, nonmagnetic;
properties of the organic semiconductors, the molecular systems, the carbon nanomaterial, the metamaterials; the quantum informatics.
This conference is a forum for scientists and practitioners involved in research, measurements, and control of semiconductors. It gives them the possibility to exchange new scientific and technical information and to find grounds for mutual cooperation. An important objective of the conference was to increase the participation of young scientists, tutors, senior students, post-graduate and doctoral students. The 9-th "Russian Conference on the Semiconductor Physics" is the latest of a series of meetings previously held in N. Novgorod (1993, 2001), St.-Petersburg (1996, 2003), Moscow (1997, 2005), Novosibirsk (1999) and Ekaterinburg (2007).

14th International Conference on Radiation Physics and Chemistry of Inorganic Materials (RPC-14), October 06-10, 2009, Astana, Kazakhstan

The Conference was organized under the auspices of TPU, ISTC, L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, RFBR in Astana, and Gumilyov Eurasian National University.
The main topics discussed were:
Elementary processes
Physics and chemistry of condensed state under the action of weak radiation: formation patterns, accumulation, evolution of exposure, radiolysis, and aging of materials.
Nonlinear effects
Nonlinear physical and chemical processes in power radiation and electrical fields, including breakdown, and destruction, and explosion, etc.
Surface
Physical and chemical radiation-enhanced processes on a solids surface.
Physical basis of radiation-related technologies.
Physical basis of radiation-related technologies.
Methods and technical equipment for radiation-related technologies of modification and research.

In the frame of an ISTC special session the results of the following ISTC projects were presented and discussed:
project № 2596 "Pulse gas discharge lasers pumped by an inductive energy storage unit with semiconductor current interrupter", (with the Federal State Unitary Enterprise RFNC-VNIITF, the head of the project work from Institute of High Current Electronics – V.F. Tarasenko).
project № 2706 "Research and creation of pulsed UV and VUV sources of spontaneous radiation with high power density", (with Institute of General Physics of the RAS and RFNC-VNIITF, the head of the project work from Institute of High Current Electronics – V.F. Tarasenko).
project № 3583 "Treatment of water using modern ultra-violet light sources", (jointly with RFNC-VNIITF, the head of the project work from Institute of High Current Electronics – V.F. Tarasenko).
project № KR-1587 "Radioecological Center of on-line monitoring of problem areas in Kyrgyzstan using wireless networks and systems" (a joint project of the Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan and the Ural State Technical University, the head of the work is Kidibaev M.M. - Shulgin B.V.).

EU-Russian Scientific Workshop on “Modern Problems of Laser Metrology”, 15 -17 October 2009, Lerici, Italy (SB-15)

An ISTC delegation took part at the International Workshop on the modern problems of laser metrology. The workshop was held in Lerici, suburb of Pisa, Italy, in the premises of Consorzio Universitario per la Geofisica, Centro di Eccellenza "Tiresia". The principal goal of the workshop is to discuss recent results and advances made in the theoretical and experimental research in the field of laser metrology. During three days of the meeting well-known scientists, researchers, and PhD students from Germany, Italy, France and the Russian Federation (total number of participants is about 60) have done more than 30 presentations. More details concerning the workshop materials (program, presentations,etc) could be found on the web page

32nd International Congress of the Society of Microbial Ecology and Diseases (SOMED) (October 29 – 30, 2009), St. Petersburg, Russia (SB-15)

The 32nd International Congress of the Society of Microbial Ecology and Diseases (SOMED) (October 29 – 30, 2009), the 2nd international congress on probiotics “St. Petersburg – Probiotics-2009” (October 28), and ISTC Science Workshop “Antibiotics and probiotics are two sides of the same coin” (October 30) were held in the St. Petersburg Holiday Inn Hotel Congress Center. The event brought together researchers from Russia, the CIS, EU and other countries working in the probiotics area to foster idea exchange and provide information on the latest investigations.

The concept of probiotics was initiated by the Russian scientist and Nobel Prize winner I. Mechnikov in 1903. Recently the interest of researchers to probiotics has drastically increased because of the need to find alternatives to antibiotics as the problem of pathogens’ drug resistance and individual antibiotic intolerance have become threatening for humanity. The “era of antibiotics” is being replaced by the “era of probiotics” – the remedy of the 21st century, according to many scientists.

Over 700 specialists from 32 countries were represented: Great Britain, Italy, Finland, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Latvia, Estonia, Greece, France, Sweden, Brazil, The Netherlands, USA, Japan, China, CIS. More than 1200 specialists attended different scientific sessions of the congress.

ISTC SPM V. Melnikov presented ISTC Targeted Initiative “Probiotics and Health”. Meetings between Russian and Western researchers resulted in new ISTC project proposals on “Astroyoghurt”, “Marine yoghurt”, “Sorbent yoghurt”, “Vegetable root yoghurt”, etc. It was agreed to strengthen and coordinate the efforts in Russia and Western countries’ collaboration in the field of Probiotics through ISTC.Poster session was arranged. The workshop program and abstracts of presentations were published.
