International Workshop on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Materials, September 29 – October 02, Obninsk, Russia

An International Workshop on Nonproliferation of Nuclear Materials was held on September 29, 2009, in Obninsk (Kaluga Region, Russia). It was co organized by the State Central Institute for Continuing Education & Training (CICET), the International Science & Technology Center, the Moscow Engineering & Physics Institute and Obninsk State Technical Institute for Nuclear Power Engineering. The nonproliferation issue is a key problem to be solved for successful development of nuclear energy. It’s especially important for the introduction of nuclear technologies in developing countries as many of them plan to turn to nuclear energy in a near future according to the IAEA. The objective of the workshop was to discuss the recent trends in the development of proliferation resistance fuel cycles and to get experts’ assessment to develop the curricula of university courses on non-proliferation.

Four Russian organizations took part in the event. ISTC supported the participation of four foreign scientists, from Germany, France, Japan, and Italy. In addition to this list, one scientist from Australia took part in the workshop.
The workshop lasted three days and included 7 sessions:
Essentials of advanced proliferation resistant fuel cycles (5 presentations, plenary presentations included)
Implementation of legal and organizational support to minimize proliferation risks (4 presentations)
Best Practices in R&D for Developing Proliferation Resistant Fuel Cycles (4 presentations)
Uranium fuels. Challenge of proliferation (6 presentations)
Simulation of proliferation resistant features (3 presentations)
Advanced methods of monitoring and control
University Courses for Non-Proliferation (3 presentations).

The main outcome of the workshop are:
Exchange on the methodology of plutonium protection through elaboration of pre-detonation effect and heat release caused by even plutonium isotopes,
Discussed methods for protection of medium enriched uranium through mixtures of alpha emitters that hinder separation of uranium isotopes in centrifuges,
Exchange on the methods of monitoring of uranium and plutonium ,
Advices received on developing university courses focusing non-proliferation.

Workshop “Plasma Physics and Plasma Technology” (PPPT-6), September 28 – October 2, 2009, Minsk, Belarus

The VI International Conference “Plasma Physics and Plasma Technology” (PPPT-6) was held in Minsk from September 28 to October 02, 2009. The event was organized by B.I.Stepanov Institute of Physics of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In countries of the Former Soviet Union, the Conference "Plasma Physics and Plasma Technology (PPPT)" is now a key forum enabling the exchange on scientific and technological achievements in plasma physics and their practical implementation in the most important areas of human activities, such as industry and agricultural production, environment protection, biology, and medicine. The Conference is held every 3 years in Minsk since 1994.
Over 180 scientists from various countries of the world attended the event:Germany, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Japan, Korea, Serbia, China, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus.
The conference scientific program covered the following topics:
1. Electric and optical discharges, near-electrode processes.
2. Transporting, optical, and thermodynamic properties of plasma, plasma dynamics in various configurations of electromagnetic fields.
3. Methods and instrumentation for plasma diagnostics.
4. Interaction of concentrated energy flows with a surface.
5. Plasma in nanotechnology.
6. Plasma applications.
7. Nonideal and dusty plasma, clusters.
8. ISTC projects.
