Moreover, it permits the car to save up to 20% in fuel consumption in urban driving environments. “The device best suits urban driving environments. As a matter of fact it is most effective in accelerations from 0 km/h or at low speed and at idle regime. In other words, it is perfect for traffic jams and traffic lights!” explains Victor Emel’yanov, Fuel Cells Targeted Initiative Manager at ISTC. This technology is based on principles that have long been known. Replacing a small amount of the main fuel (whether petrol, propane, or natural gas) by hydrogen leads to substantial chemical changes making the combustion more efficient and stable. This principle lowers nitric oxide emissions, which is the most harmful molecule for the environment and human health, by 3000%! Not to mention the reduction of carbon monoxide emissions by 2500%, thanks to a more complete fuel burning. Fuel cell technology is now praised worldwide and hydrogen is described as the energy of the future….. but one question remains: How and where to get the gas? There are many options to solve this problem. One can refill pressurized gas tanks, but there are almost no hydrogen-gas stations. Electrolyzing (breaking down water into its constituent parts) demands special water that freezes in the winter. The reformers, creating H from hydrocarbons, are generally bulky and need a lot of time to launch, therefore can’t be applied to the automobile industry in its current form. But Scientists and engineers working on the ISTC project succeeded in creating a simple, cheap and effective 2 liter reformer for natural gas. It can be launched in less than 10 seconds and produces enough hydrogen to keep the engine of the “Gazel” minivan working. This technology has broader applications than just the car industry. Any engine using hydrocarbons to create energy could benefit from it. Companies interested in knowing more about this novel technology can read the technical description below. ISTC welcomes investments to bring the technology to the market.
